When I went to my grandfather’s house in summer holidays and New Year, we took a walk along the nearby riverbank. He was a quiet and observant person.
He went to China in the war in his twenties, and after the war he and the wife came to Tokyo from the countryside. And then they had children, and built a small house in the suburbs of Tokyo.
Grandma died of cancer before the age of seventy, and after that grandfather had lived about 15 years more.
In his later years, he had been drawing a lot of the Heart Sutra.
I now understand that he was quite Buddhist in his mind at that time.
